MYCO-CRETE

Architectural Design School diploma project: Design a more environmentally friendly floor system for contexts that primarily use concrete construction out of necessity.

Task

Design a concrete floor system using Mycelium as a formwork

Team

3 Designers, Researchers, and Fabricators: Ben Simmons, Michael Brooks, Torain Bullock

Impact

Design a final prototype to be used in contexts that require concrete building strategies.

Prototypes

We completed a series of prototypes in order to refine our design of mycelium formwork, and test the durability of the floor system on a reduced scale.

Research and TakeAways

We conducted research on areas of growth within the mycelium industry, and the product of vaults and their typical construction.

01

Mycelium as a material has a learning curve, and we were tasked with creating initial prototypes for the purpose of getting to know the material.

02

Although mycelium itself is not structural, we found examples of it being used as formwork to support concrete objects or systems.
